Steel Warriors is the brainchild of freuds’ Ben Wintour who dreamt up the idea with his business partner, Pia, as a way to create awareness of, and tackle knife crime in London.
Their aim was to build a free space for people to exercise and turn the negativity of knife crime in the capital to a positive.
After finding out that the Metropolitan Police confiscate large quantities of steel from London’s streets every month, they managed to convince the Police to provide them with over two tonnes of surrendered and confiscated knives. The knives were then melted down and used to build the equipment for their first calisthenics park.
Calisthenics is a form of exercise where you use your own body weight to build muscle mass and the site is using Snapchat for people to access ‘virtual trainers’ to learn how to use the equipment.
The park officially opened on 30th October 2017 with the event put together by Proud Robinson & Partners. Many of the people that have helped over the previous 12 months attended the event alongside Met Police representatives, the Mayor of Poplar, the UK Calisthenics champion and MP Sarah Newton.
